Betty de Rothschild (1805–1886) was the wife of James de Rothschild, the original founder of the French branch of the family. Following his death, she spent the winters in Cannes and began construction on her mansion in 1881. Soon every notable person traveling in Cannes was invited to the Villa Rothschild. The Rothschild family kept it until World War II, when it was requisitioned by German forces. Today it belongs to the City of Cannes and houses a public library.
