Jürgen Ponto was the Chairman of the Dresdner Bank, formerly one of Germany's largest banking corporations that was acquired by competitor Commerzbank in 2009.
In 1977, Ponto was assassinated by members of the German terror group Red Army Faction (RAF) in events leading up to the "German Autumn" (apex of the conflict between the RAF and the German state).
It is thought that the terrorists attempted to kidnap Ponto at his home, this attempt failed when Ponto made a vigorous effort to defend himself. He was then shot five times and later died of his serious wounds.
