The McCain family is one of the wealthiest in Canada having significant interests in McCain Foods and Maple Leaf foods. The late Wallace McCain founded McCain Foods with his brother Harrison in 1956 and today the family is known for its philanthropy and business successes. For many decades the Wallace McCain side of the family has made Round Hill in Jamaica one of their winter homes.
Round Hill has been a warm weather get away destination for three generations of the Wallace McCain side of the family including a family tradition of spending a few weeks each year at New Years at their private family compound located on the grounds of this ultra exclusive resort in Jamaica. With its own tennis courts and an expansive pool area overlooking Montego Bay the McCain property boasts one of the best views in the Caribbean. Round Hill has been a destination for the world's elite for more than 60 years, from famous Hollywood celebrities to royalty and names like Ralph Lauren. Read more about Round Hill in the links below. If you are there during the holidays and see a super-yacht moored in the bay, it quite possibly could be Inukshuk, a 107' award winning carbon fibre sailing yacht with its own crew of four. This is the second yacht owned by Wallace's son Michael McCain a business success in his own right as CEO of the $3 billion food giant, Maple Leaf Foods. Like with many super-yachts, owners try and recover their operating costs that can run into the millions per year by chartering them out when not being used. Inukshuk may be available starting at only $72,000/week. (see links below)
Controversy is no stranger to some members of the McCain family. In March 2016 Eleanor McCain (Wallace's daughter) made national headlines twice in one week; one issue being the release of court documents related to her former husband Jeff Melanson and separately her purchase of a property next to her summer home in Nova Scotia. (see Virtual Globe Trotting link below for more details).
Michael McCain was widely praised for his handling of a serious food safety issue related to his company Maple Leaf Foods back in 2008 and more recently for a high profile divorce and one of the largest judgements in Canadian history for spousal support. (see links below)
Round Hill for the McCain family is both a constant and well deserved sanctuary.
