Charles Stewart Mott († 1973) was General Motors' largest individual shareholder for many years. He was the head of one of the world's largest foundations, owner of banks, water works, department stores, as well as the 50th and 55th Mayor of Flint, Michigan.
"Applewood" was built in 1916 as a self-sustaining farm. The main residence and grounds encompass approximately 34 acres, 18 extensively landscaped. The Ruth Mott Foundation currently maintains Applewood.
